Fundraising status: 3809,23€ or 33% reached, there was a big jump last week as usual a massive thank for the one contributing ! I know that I`m repeating myself but please keep on supporting. As we are biking now since more than a month in Africa, I can promise you that it is stunning to see the number of kids not having the chance to receive an education and instead working in the fields or in small shops.. Therefore let us do together a little bit and help at least a few of them to get out of this situation! Thanks a lot and If needed, the link is here

After a rather unpleasant stay in Addis due to the loss of my phone, I was quite happy to hit the road again… As for entering into the city, we had, for safety reasons to organize a convoy to leave the Ethiopian capital. Therefore, as 2 days ago, we blocked the circulation and created a lovely mess as we did move again at the speed of a depressed turtle. Moreover after a few kilometres, we were forced to do a U-turn to avoid some protests in the streets (this was a nice chaos). Hopefully, after around 16 km we’ve finally been released and could bike as we wanted towards our next camp. After a few kilometres alone, Baldr and Clément joined me and we started to bike together. These two guys being among the strongest and fastest riders of the group, it was quite a challenge to follow them until our camp of lake Koka. Moreover it seems to me that their ultimate goal is to ignore the potholes (there was a lot of them on that stretch) by going as fast as possible to fly over them…this was scary. On the same kind of idea, Baldr decided to draft behind a truck, which is not a bad idea, but choosing the garbage truck…
Anyway, after a bit more than 4 hours we finally reached the camp (I was almost dead), where we’ve been welcomed by many Marabu Storch, the usual kids crew and a many cows (a few of them decided to pass through our camp..). The location of this camp on the shore of lake Koka was absolutely beautiful and we therefore enjoyed a nice and relax afternoon, surrounded by kids. Angela and myself went to play table soccer against the kids and even won a few games.
On the following day the program was quite basic, turning left after the camp, biking 107 flat km and then turning right into Ostrich camp. There is therefore, not so much to say about that day, the landscape was rather boring with some very long flat stretches and as we had a quite friendly tailwind, Mike and I made these 107 km in less than 4 hours without pushing at all (I could not have push anyway as my legs were quite impacted by the previous day). As we were getting close to our camp and still had a lot of time, we decided to stop in the last village on our way to enjoy a few beers and a bit of conversation with the locals. And there we had the chance to meet the oldest man of the village, 97 years old, 7 wife and 36 kids… (not sure if these figures are 100% correct ..) And the gentleman was still quite fit as he was “protecting” us against some local drunk guys, respect Monsieur! We finally reach the Ostrich camp and as said in the name, we had quite a few of these funny animals walking around within the camp which was quite funny. And as a big luxury, some locals even managed to organize a very basic shower! A fantastic pleasure!!!

After a very long day on a bus (260 km in 9 hours..) to avoid an unsafe part of Ethiopia again, it was time to…celebrate Karneval! I therefore got my unicorn helmet and started my day with a beer as it is the tradition in Köln for Weiberfasnacht. After this not so healthy start of the day, I could enjoy some absolutely fantastic scenery, biking down into the rift valley, along banana plantation and other exotic fruits, this day was just a wonder for the eyes up to km 90 as after that the road change to a flat and not very interesting stretch. This day was unfortunately the day Mike had a crash, this is our first accident of the tour but by chance Mike is not too badly injured even if he will leave the tour for a few weeks as he needs to fix his collar bone. Come back soon Mike!
Moreover on a slightly more funny note, I was still trying to get a report from the Ethiopian police in regard to the theft of my cellphone (that’s what my insurance wants..) but unfortunately after trying two additional police station and even with the support of our local crew, I had to accept the reality, despite the beautiful pink walls of their offices, the Ethiopian policeman are not interested at all by my cellphone story but not AT ALL !
After this quite emotional day we are on the road again for our last full day in Ethiopia. We start the day through some nice rolling hills, enjoying as usual the beauty of the landscape and all the stunning rural scene and beautifully painted houses we have along the road.On that day, we faced quite a funny situation as our lunch stop has been invaded by thirsty goats. These goats wanted to drink our washing water and it was quite funny to try to keep them away of us… After this short funny moment, we enjoyed another pleasure with a nice climb of 500 m over 10 km. After this climb the rest of the day was all downhill and there again (I know that I repeat myself) we enjoyed some absolutely amazing views. during the last kilometres i could feel that we are definitely leaving the Ethiopian highlands as the temperatures are increasing quite significantly as we are getting lower and lower. we finished the day with a very nice traditional meal prepared by one of our Ethiopian crew member and a nice fire to close the Ethiopian chapter.
And here we are, after 3609.33 km, 14923 hm and 135 hours and 58 minutes on the bike, the first part of the eighth section is over! Still nothing to mention, the legs and all the rest are still doing pretty well.
The second part of the eighth section will follow soon as well as a gallery and an additional topic, stay tuned
